The Double Barrier Of Age Requirements And High Qualifications In Entry-Level Employment Opportunities In Indonesia

This paper investigates how strict age limits and increasing qualification requirements in Indonesia’s entry-level job market create structural barriers to formal employment. Although entry-level positions are intended for new graduates, many employers require one to two years of work experience, technical skills, or formal internship backgrounds, creating a mismatch between employer expectations and the actual capabilities of fresh graduates. Using a literature review and survey data from new graduates, the study examines the effects of age and experience-based recruitment filters on applicant confidence, job readiness, and access to employment opportunities. The findings reveal that these hiring practices contribute to the difficulties faced by new graduates in entering the workforce, considering Indonesia’s socioeconomic and educational conditions. Therefore, the study proposes reforms from both employer and policymaker perspectives to promote a more inclusive labor market and reduce barriers that contribute to rising youth unemployment and inequality in workforce opportunities.
